THE GARDEN IS SINGING captures the soul of the garden in the context of the greater global purpose public botanic gardens serve – heightening awareness of plant conservation and preservation; demonstrating the success of a functioning eco-system in a 37-acre corner of California; bringing the visual, emotional and spiritual experience of Lotusland to the screen.
Ganna Walska came to California in the summer of 1941 – leaving behind her opera career, her homes in Paris and New York with their obligatory social calendars, and ultimately, her 6th husband, Hatha Yoga master, Theos Bernard – determined to discover her great purpose, her divine expression, her true voice.
The film layers Lotusland’s botanic, historic and architectural significance with Ganna Walska’s remarkable life. Exploring aspects of this botanic nirvana not accessible on tours, the film takes us behind the scenes and into the archives, featuring illuminating interviews with people who keep the garden singing. Those who knew her, including Ganna’s niece, Hania Tallmadge, share first-hand memories. CEO Gwen Stauffer and Archivist Rose Thomas and Lotusland supporters offer insights about Ganna Walska’s exceptional achievements as an entrepreneurial woman, individualist and feminist.
