FLOCK: birds on the brink

Guest Curator Nancy Gifford

February 28 to May 23, 2015

In addition to the breathtaking gardens of Lotusland, all visitors will experience FLOCK, the contemporary art exhibit inspired by an environmental imperative – the global loss of wild bird populations and their role as indicators of the health of our planet.

Gwen Stauffer, Executive Director

Statement of Purpose

Scientists are measuring the loss of wild bird populations to assess global environmental and ecosystem health, develop conservation strategies, and fulfill biodiversity targets. Birds are believed to be excellent indicators of biodiversity because they are sensitive to changes to their habitats including destruction, pollution and climate change. Birds are also excellent ambassadors for the messages about biodiversity because birds resonate with people, who see or hear birds daily.

FLOCK: Birds on the Brink is a contemporary art exhibit designed to educate the public about causes of wild bird population decline with a focus on the relationship between wild avian species and plant species, as well as other animal species. FLOCK intends to foster understanding of the critical impact of wild bird populations on human well-being and the conservation efforts to save birds, as we celebrate the daily presence of birds in our gardens and communities. FLOCK includes mixed media visual arts in gallery and garden settings, accompanied by participatory programming to provide a provocative and visceral experience that will inspire our visitors to action.
