Each had a love of beauty\, music\, self-expression\, and a life-long ambition to express themselves through the gardens they created. Madame Ganna Walska created her boldly dramatic garden over a forty-three-year period while Virginia Robinson designed and honed her classical style Garden Villa over a period of sixty-six years. Each garden exudes the dramatic personalities of its creators. Both gardens have been meticulously preserved and rank among the finest in the world! \n\n\n\nAfter a fascinatingly docent-led tour of the historic property\, enjoy a beautifully catered lunch on the terrace before we depart. \n\n\n\nAs we make our way back to Santa Barbara\, we will stop at a nearby private home and garden for an exclusive look at their Scott Shrader designed garden.

DESCRIPTION:Location: Lotusland \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Lotusland for an intimate presentation by Kaye Spilker\, Curator Emerita of Costume and Textiles at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHistory has seen many kinds of crowns on the heads of kings and queens\, socialites\, and tradespeople. Hats have been fascinating accessories for the most luxurious (and shabbiest) dress\, used both for protection and pageantry\, and signifying artistry\, wealth\, occupation\, status\, and prestige. This presentation will journey through several centuries of history’s headwear including the ancestral legacy of Madame Walska’s spectacular collection of hats. Kaye Spilker’s talk will be accompanied by a display of a selection of Madame Walska’s hats.  \n\n\n\nA  reception will follow the talk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Keynote Kaye Spilker: Kaye received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Syracuse University and a Master of Fine Arts in art history from UCLA.  Following her undergraduate studies\, she worked for six years as an artist in Belgium\, where her works are represented in public and private collections.  She joined the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1987and retired after thirty challenging and very fulfilling years. The estate has a large rare cycad collection garden\, containing some rare plant species no longer extant in their original native habitat. His ancestors acquired Rancho Santa Clara del Norte\, a Mexican land grant in 1864\, from its original grantee. Tom\, his two sons\, his two nephews and long-time staff share responsibilities for the ranch which includes include orchard pasture\, crop and environmentally sensitive riparian lands. They also look after the ranch’s historic main post\, which includes its stately main house\, Victorian era outbuildings\, and six acres of grounds and gardens with old and new collections of palms\, cycads\, unusual conifers\, and flowering plants in 10 differently themed gardens. \n\n\n\nRegenerative farming and gardening practices are not new at the ranch\, though practicing them with greater breadth and depth has intensified. Tom’s father was a believer in mulch\, and worked with Dr. Gordon Frankie at UC Berkeley in a program to encourage the ranch’s 126 species of native pollinators into avocado orchards. In the last four years\, this single – garden habitat experiment has been expanded substantially. Over 4 miles of habitat-supporting hedge rows have been added\, a mile-long riparian corridor\, rich in plant and animal life connects riparian habitat in the Santa Clara River to the central portion of the ranch\, and thousands of flowering perennials now surround the ranch’s orchards. She is a licensed landscape contractor\, LEED\, an EPA-certified Water Wise designer\, and certified permaculture designer. Natasha has taught California-friendly landscape design for the Metropolitan Water District and landscape design and landscape drafting at Santa Barbara City College. She also has the privilege of serving on the board of directors for the Central Coast Green Building Council\, as well as the American Institute of Architects Santa Barbara where she is a chair for the Committee On The Environment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAndy Sheaffer – Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFarmer & Geologist \n\n\n\nAndy Sheaffer is a first-generation farmer growing avocados and lemons in western Ventura County. Andy and his family manage approximately 350 acres of avocados and 100 acres of lemons using regenerative principles\, focusing on improving soil health and increasing both nutrient density and yield. \n\n\n\nAndy was born and raised in Carpinteria\, CA. He attended Carpinteria High School and later UCSB on a partial athletic scholarship. He had a successful throwing career that earned him first team all American in the hammer throw- making it to the Olympic trials in New Orleans in 1992. This experience led him and a handful of teammates to spend a summer in Europe competing in track meets. While in Zermatt\, Switzerland\, he saw a machine that fascinated him. He spent the entire day hiking up to it to see what it was. It turned out to be a “walking excavator”. Upon returning to the states\, he began to work in the marine construction business\, all the while thinking of the machine he had discovered. In 1996 he found one for sale and bought it. He taught himself to operate it on his parent’s property. This was the beginning of a business that took him all over the country performing rock fall mitigation work. Indirectly\, the business is what led him to farming. People connected him with the knowledge of working with steep hillsides and when the farm came up for sale a number of people contacted him to see if he was interested in purchasing the challenging property that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. \n\n\n\nIn 2008\, he and his wife Kathy bought the 750-acre ranch called Vista Punta Gorda. When they bought the property\, they had already been married about 7 years and had three young kids. The farm had a lot of old trees and was being farmed conventionally. They studied the farm for a few years before making any major changes. They began transition to regenerative\, organic farming practices in 2011/12. In 2015\, Andy sold his construction business and became a full-time farmer. The farm has gone through many changes of the past 15 years of ownership\, not the least of which we loosing 200 acres of the most productive sections of the ranch in the Thomas fire and then replanting and managing those acres regeneratively over the last 4 years.

This year\, Lotusland launches a series of programs designed to have you engage with nature and experience the Garden with a fresh perspective. \n\n\n\nSkilled professionals will lead a series of Wellbeing Wednesdays\, special sessions for regular doses of nature’s healing\, resilience\, and a sense of wholeness. \n\n\n\nEach class consists of a 45-minute guided activity followed by a 45-minute walk in the Garden. \n\n\n\nOur August 16th Wellbeing Wednesday session will feature a Tai Chi with Chao Pang.   Chao will introduce and share Qi/Chi exercises working with the flow of the Garden to promote inner peace and calm through out the day.   \n\n\n\nChao Pang immigrated with his parents to the US when he was 13 from Taiwan. He has a Master degree in Physics\, became a successful entrepreneur while continue to pursue the Eastern traditions through study of martial arts\, Eastern philosophies and energetic. He had studied martial arts for many decades and currently focuses on Tai Ji and has traveled extensively and studied with 3 different Tai Ji masters of Yang\, and Wu-Hao traditions. Now he enjoys sharing his knowledge to all those who are interested in understanding eastern philosophy\, energetic and internal martial arts. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWellbeing Wednesdays are presented in association with Wellbeing Series Sponsor Belle Hahn

Mary Gonzalez\, owner of Sweet Mountain Top\, will be leading a wild-flower bouquet workshop using flowers from her Carpinteria farm. Bring the ideas home as you create your own sachet of edible wildflower seeds to grow in your backyard from our Wildflower Seed Buffet.   Enjoy lite bites and  wines from Babcock Winery. Petal Pops from Laguna Beach-based Amborella Organics will be available to guests as well! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEat Your Flowers started out of Loria’s Stern’s tiny kitchen located on a 1890’s built Montecito\, California estate. In 2016\, while renting one of the cottages on the property\, Loria began experimenting with the edible bounty that grew freely on the grounds.  Loria studied medicinal and edible plants all through her years of culinary training.  She did not attend culinary school\, but did receive professional training via the hard knocks way… by working long hours in dozens of kitchens and bakeries. \n\n\n\n\n\nLoria’s vibrant edible botanical creations have been celebrated in Vogue\, The New York Times\, Harper’s Bazaar\, and Oprah among others. The Los Angeles based chef\, baker\, botanist\, gardener\, and artist first gained fame as the originator of the botanical pressed cookie and has also created many other unique creations that have also been featured widely. SUMMARY:Sullivan Goss x Lotusland: Where the Wild Things Grow
DESCRIPTION:Date: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSullivan Goss is excited to announce a contemporary artistic collaboration with Ganna Walska Lotusland to present Where the Wild Things Grow. The exhibition will showcase work by over 25 local and regional artists inspired by the rare specimens and unique atmosphere of Lotusland’s cultivated landscape. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the artwork will be donated to the Garden. \n\n\n\nThe Where the Wild Things Grow exhibition will run from June 30 to July 24. An opening artist’s reception will be held on July 6 from 5-8:00 PM in conjunction with the 1st Thursday Art Walk\, hosted monthly by Downtown Santa Barbara. \n\n\n\nThe artists of Where the Wild Things Grow bring a contemporary eye to the tradition of botanical art. While the 19th century saw naturalist artists recording botany and wildlife with precise illustrations\, 21st century artists have a different agenda. For this new generation\, nature’s endless diversity of design is pared down to only essential shapes as the focus is more on color and design than botanical accuracy. \n\n\n\nArtwork styles for Where the Wild Things Grow range from formal realism to more abstract and unconventional mediums. Works on paper\, sculpture\, and paintings will be included\, each expressing the many botanical inspirations to be discovered at Lotusland.
