Sork\n\n\n\nProfessor Victoria Sork is a plant biologist\, evolutionary geneticist\, and conservation scientist who studies how long-lived trees will survive rapid climate warming\, with a special focus on the evolutionary success of oaks. Author of ~150 publications\, her research has investigated all aspects of natural processes shaping the survival of natural tree populations in temperate and tropical habits. She is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, the American Association for Advancement of Sciences\, and the California Academy of Sciences. SUMMARY:Music to Welcome Moons into Waves- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Public Event On-Site \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\nPatron Circle: $85Supporter Level Members: $100 Non-Members: $150 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSOLD OUT\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMusic to Welcome Moons into Waves\n\n\n\nStep into the meditative beauty of Lotusland’s Japanese Garden for Music to Welcome Moons into Waves (2025)\, a newly composed ritualistic work blending ancient Japanese instruments with the sounds of nature. Organized by Professor Fabio Rambelli and composed by Daryl Jamieson\, this performance draws upon medieval Japanese concepts of music\, rhythm\, and place\, creating a profound dialogue between human artistry and nonhuman soundscapes. \n\n\n\nThis immersive piece is scored for four ancient Japanese instruments historically used in gagaku\, the ceremonial music of Japan’s imperial court\, Buddhist temples\, and Shinto shrines. These instruments\, largely unchanged since the 8th century\, preserve the sounds of ages past. Among them\, the ō-hichiriki and u were long-lost instruments that have only recently been reconstructed\, making this performance an exceptionally rare opportunity to hear them live\, even in Japan. The composition is performed from 5:00 – 6:00 PM\, during the Japanese Hour of the Monkey\, as birds\, winds\, and waters prepare for nightfall. A reception will follow. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThomas Piercy – Hichiriki & Ō-hichiriki\n\n\n\nA renowned clarinetist and hichiriki specialist\, Thomas Piercy is recognized for his mastery of both Western and Japanese woodwinds. His diverse career spans classical\, contemporary\, and traditional music\, and he has premiered numerous compositions blending Japanese and Western musical elements. As a hichiriki player\, he has trained with masters of gagaku and brings a deep understanding of its hauntingly expressive sound to this performance.Hichiriki & Ō-hichiriki – Double-reed wind instruments with a distinctive\, emotive tone \n\n\n\nA. Lish Lindsey – Ryūteki\n\n\n\nFlutist A. Lish Lindsey is a dedicated performer of historical and contemporary wind instruments\, specializing in both Western flutes and traditional Japanese flutes\, including the ryūteki. The ryūteki\, or “dragon flute\,” is a key instrument in gagaku\, its penetrating\, bright sound evoking the movement of celestial beings. Lotusland cares for many species of cycads that are threatened — including five species in the collection that are believed to be extinct in the wild. Upon its completion\, Charles Glass\, a renowned plantsman who designed the garden\, told Madame Walska\, “This will be one of the greatest achievements of our lives.” Glass was not exaggerating. Lotusland’s collection is considered one of the most complete in any American public garden\, with over 450 specimens and almost half of the known species. \n\n\n\nNOTABLE SPECIES \n\n\n\nEncephalartos horridus\, E. trispinosus\, E. lehmannii\, E. heenanii\, E. latifrons\, E. ferox\, E. lanatus\, E. friderici-guilielmi\, Cycas revoluta\, Lepidozamia peroffskyana\, Ceratozamia latifolia\, Ceratozamia fuscoviridis\, Dioon oaxacensis\, Wollemia nobilis\, Jubaeopsis caffra
