The original estate swimming pool, built in the early 1920s and flanked by shallow ponds, has become the major water garden at Lotusland. The old pool now displays several species and cultivars of Indian lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) and the side ponds have more lotus and various species and cultivars of water lily (Nymphaea, Euryale, Nuphar, & Victoria). On either side of tile benches at the north end of the ponds are bog gardens, featuring plants that can thrive in damp soil such as taro (Colocasia esculenta) and ornamental sugar cane (Saccharum cv.). A large clump of Papyrus hangs gracefully over a shallow pool of tropical water lilies. The original bath house still stands, now used for gardeners' tools. ![]() To see a 360° panorama of the Water Garden click here.
