The cycad pond

Cycad is the term used to designate a group of unusual cone-bearing plants which were common during the time of the dinosaurs. Most species are endangered and some are now extinct in the wild. The most commonly known cycad is the sago palm (Cycas revoluta).

Cycad cones

The cycad garden was the last garden created by Madame Walska. Thought to be the most complete collection of cycads in any public garden in the United States, Lotusland has over 400 mature specimens of cycads, with ten of the eleven living genera and more than half of the known species represented.
