Aloe is a genus of succulent plants in the family Asphodelaceae, native to Africa and Madagascar. Many aloes have spectacular red, yellow and orange flowers. The Aloe Garden is devoted to more than 120 kinds of aloes, including Aloe barberae, A. dichotoma, A. plicatilis, and A. ramosissima. At the center of the garden is an unusual shallow kidney-shaped pool to which Madame Walska added two large cascading fountains of giant clam shells and a border of abalone shells. Another feature of the garden that dates back to the early days of the estate is a row of Chilean wine palms (Jubaea chilensis) that leads from the Water Garden toward the aviary, which houses cockatiels. Two other unusual plants in the garden are large specimens of Acrocomia totai and Beaucarnea stricta. |
