Tools: |
Anise Oil |
| Box trap with wire leash |
| One branch of cheeseweed (Malva) |
| Shovel, weeder, or hand trowel |
| Procedure: |
Excavate enough soil to fit the box trap flush up against the gopher run. |
| Anise oil is used as an attractant. Place 2-3 drops on the inside rear wall of the trap on either side of the ¾" hole. |
| Malva is a common weed with large enough leaves to disguise the triggering mechanism of the box trap and is a favorite food for gophers. |
| Do not handle the underside of the trap or the bait with bare hands (tweezers or rubber gloves may be used to bait the trap). |
| A hand weeder is an excellent tool for discovering gopher runs. |
| Two traps may be set back to back in a main run facing both directions of the run. After catching the gopher(s), the traps may be re-set in the same run because other gophers commonly share the same runs. |
| Hand trowels are helpful in the final shaping and fitting of the traps against the openings. |
| Sometimes a small gopher will trigger the trap without being caught but resetting the trap with fresh bait and new anise oil usually gets them. |
